July 2003 Contest (Contest created by Lynn Hickernell! Thanks, Lynn!) Jars of Clay have written and recorded dozens of songs together since they first wrote “Fade to Grey” in their Greenville College dorm back in 1993. Over the years, certain images have been repeated throughout their work. For instance, that very first song contained the lyrics, “These lonely tears I cry/They keep me in chains/And I wish they'd release me.” The image of chains was used again in three later Jars songs: “Love Song for a Savior” (“A great salvation through it calls to the people/Who stare into nowhere/And can't feel the chains on their souls”), “Grace” (“God, I admit I've loved these chains”), and “Something Beautiful” (“And I'm still fighting for the word to break these chains”). |
