I’m not really an expert at writing concert reviews, but I was disappointed that nothing was written about the show at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom last year (6/15/02). That was such an awesome show, and bizarre, due to the fact that Steve didn’t even come—which made for a different feel to a lot of their songs. (They had a guy named Tyler filling in, and he was really good, too.) But Saturday’s show—one year later at the exact same venue—took on a whole different feel from last year’s. For one, Steve came this time and we were glad to have him. Second, this was an all-acoustic show, minus the stools. No electric guitars to be seen.
While the roadies were making the final touches on getting the equipment ready, I was sitting to the right of the stage where we could see the band waiting and joking around. This arena used to be where they held some kind of Batman stunt show, so there was this false brick wall behind the stage and the guys all took turns breaking through it like the Hulk. It was pretty funny. Maybe there’s an idea for the next tour.
The show started off with “Disappear,” which sounded a lot different played acoustically. That kicked right into “Faith Like a Child.” Then the guys had some surprises up their sleeves. I don’t remember the exact order, but they played “Blind,” “Boy on a String,” and the new favorite, “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.” Dan did a long intro into “Girls” pausing and holding out the first few words, trying to disguise it. The crowd erupted once they figured out what it was.
Then, like last week, they tried out a new song on the crowd. “Show You Love” is an awesome new song. It made me antsy to get my hands on the upcoming CD.
“Valley Song,” “I Need You,” and “Fly” were performed flawlessly and got the crowd grooving. “I’m Alright” started the finale, with Dan trying out some new falsetto at the end of the song, finishing with a true Barry White “Oh, yeah.” “Revolution” came next, followed by “Flood.” Like always, “Flood” got the crowd into a dizzying frenzy, with everyone jumping to the chorus, which got the band more and more wound up. Great trick for an acoustic version!
Then, to throw off anyone who knows their usual closing numbers (like me), they added “Love Song” at the end. It was a stirring rendition with Dan leading the crowd in singing the chorus while he sang “and my heart beats for you” and then dabbled in a little bit of “Jesus loves me, this I know.” I think we all had goosebumps by the end.
After a quick break, in which lots of people left (???) they came out and did an acoustic “Worlds Apart.” I knew they wouldn’t get away without playing that one, and they delivered it in perfect form. Thanks, guys, for the show. Hope to see you again next year (year 3 of 3?) if not sooner!
