Dan Haseltine Posts Explanation

If you’re active on Twitter or pay attention to faith-based blogs, you’ve surely heard about the controversy surrounding Jars of Clay frontman Dan Haseltine and his recent tweets regarding same-sex marriage. Yesterday, Dan posted an explanation of his comments, including an apology for how the situation was handled:

“In my questions and dialogue with people on Twitter, it became evident that the issue I had chosen to discuss was far too personal, nuanced, and deeply connected to faith and our human condition to honor the amount of wrestling that others have done on this topic. And though they were my questions and it was a dialogue provoked by me, it bled into the Jars of Clay world, and my other band mates felt people’s dismay, frustration and the projection of my views and ideas back on to them. It is not theirs to shoulder.

It was a poor choice of venue on my part. I chose some of my words poorly. And I was unable to moderate the conversation in such a way that it kept everyone’s views with a shared validity and civility as I had hoped. And so, I am not going to continue the conversation on that forum. I do apologize for causing such a negative stir.”

Note from Mike: Some might be wondering why we chose to remain silent about this subject over the last week. Jarchives is a fan website run by volunteers, and as such, we have no official affiliation to Jars of Clay. Rather than adding to the controversy, we decided to wait for an official statement from the band. We were encouraged to share Dan’s blog post to help provide context.

Here at Jarchives, our mission and practice has been to post about Jars of Clay’s music and music-related news. Historically, we’ve refrained from speculating about band members’ personal lives / opinions / politics, and this will continue to be our policy in the future.

  1. We all make mistakes, it’s unreasonable to think of Dan as any less.

He did state in his blog he wanted to do more discussion and interviews. I hope he follows through with that; I really look forward to it.
